281 - Piusa bicycle route

Vastseliina (0 km) – Möldri (4 km) – Jõksi (7.2 km) – Lindora (14.8 km) – Piusa Caves (23.5 km)

The Piusa River Primaeval Valley Landscape Protection Area has been established to protect the Piusa River Primaeval Valley and its Devonian sandstone outcrops. The Piusa River has the highest stream gradient in Estonia and once had many watermills on it. The river is still narrow and shallow in the protected area.

Start your trip at Vastseliina Fortress, which was powerful in its time and unique in terms of its foreign architecture. Now, it is home to a fascinating museum.

As there is no road following the river bank starting from Vastseliina, you have to make a small detour in the direction of Meremäe. Ride over the hill, take in the views, until you reach the river again near the Make Mill. Attractions include the Make Wall, the Savioja Mill and the flowing river waters in the valley below.

Until Tiisleri Mill, the journey runs right by the river. After that you'll cross a hill that stands a little further away from the river, and at the Jõksi Wall, you will reach the river again.

At the Väike-Härma Mill, you will cross the river via a highway bridge and you'll have to climb Jaanimäe Hill along the highway. The next section of the road has been seriously damaged due to forestry work, but it is still easy to get around by bike. The forests and forest floors here on the sandy surface are wonderful, mossy and pleasantly hilly.

The next section follows the river for quite some time. Here you can enjoy views of the Keldri and Kõlgusniidu walls. Keldri Wall is the highest Devonian sandstone outcrop in Estonia, up to 43 metres high. Kõlgusniidu Wall is one of the most beautiful in terms of its colours. You can climb the hillside above both walls and enjoy the views.

Once you leave the forest, you will find a well-kept meadow, a large recreation centre and a couple of lovely farms. Coming along the forest road, you will reach the road in Lindora
