Kuressaare – Upa – Kaali – Püha – Pihtla – Ilpla – Kuressaare (42 km)
This island route is a light day trip from Kuressaare allowing you to visit a few of the most well-known sights. There are cycling paths when riding out of Kuressaare. Continuing on to Leisi Road and later turning in the direction of Kaali you will be following the highway. Before arriving, you will pass the Kaarma Stronghold, where you can see a noticeable depression in the middle of a 4800 square meter flat yard where a well used to be. The gates of the fortress in the north-eastern and north-western corner of the ramp are clearly visible.
The Kaali meteorite crater field is the rarest natural sight in Estonia, being also the most noteworthy crater field in Eurasia. The meteorite fell here about 7500 years ago and caused damage to the already inhabited Saaremaa comparable to the explosion of a small nuclear bomb. At an altitude of 5–10 km, the meteorite broke down and fell to the ground in pieces, the largest of which created a crater with a diameter of 110 m, 22 m deep, as well as 8 smaller craters.
Next, head to the Püha Church near Pihtla, which is one of the oldest buildings in Saaremaa and has been built as a fortress church.
Ride back to Kuressaare through Pihtla and Ilpla. Near the end of the route you can use cycling paths again.
The whole route runs on asphalt and is therefore quite easy to complete. Pathways have also been built along major roads.
It is best to start the trip from Kuressaare. Kaali or Pihtla are good starting points as well.
